Spicy Flies and a Quick Trip to the ER

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

HIVE INSPECTION: 03/28/21

First things first: HE IS OK.

But the weekend of hell continues. We went back to the ranch again today to drop off sugar water to the remaining hive and do a quick reconfiguration. The Spice Girlz (as I am now calling them) were NOT having it. At. All. They were angry, and they were everywhere.

I must have looked down and the mesh of my face veil was too close to my chin because I got stung on my chin. A couple of times. I also got stung on my wrist through my leather glove. Robbin was stung on his nose again and we abandoned the plan, fed them and just high tailed it out of there.

It turned ugly fast when we were leaving as Robbin jumped out of the truck without a jacket or gloves on to "quickly" close and lock the gate. The Girlz were not fooled and still hangry – and he took several more stings to the back of his neck.

After driving down the road a bit, we pulled over and doctored our stings with Sting Kill (the best stuff on the market). I gave Robbin two Benadryl and we headed home, disheartened and licking our wounds. About 10 minutes into the drive, Robbin started to wheeze. He then said his underarms felt itchy. Uh oh. Not a good sign. I said if the symptoms started to feel systemic or if he started to really have trouble breathing to let me know and I would pull over and we could use an EPI pen. A few minutes later he pulled up his shirt sleeve and his arm was COVERED in a rash. At that point we were about 2/3 of the way to Bertram so I just proceeded to drive like a mad woman while Robbin looked up the closest medical facility.

We pull up to a place in Bertram. CLOSED. I high tail it back on to Hwy 29 and head east to Liberty Hill. "COMING 2021" read the sign on the new ARC building. GAH. In hindsight (which is ALWAYS spot on) we should have given him one of the EPI doses, but I ended up speeding to the nearest hospital in Leander.

The good news was it was a slow ER day and they took him back right away. He got a shot of epinephrine, more Benadryl, a steroid shot and a breathing treatment. His reaction was under control within a few minutes but he had to stay under observation for a few hours to make sure once the medication they administered start to wear off his symptoms didn't return.

If this Isn't the cherry on top of already stressful weekend.
